My work explores disease in terms of the effect it has on the body and mind as well as the process of transformation and rebirth.  My work for ‘To be Lost is to be Free’ consists of an installation piece with sound. I wanted a juxtaposition of something visible with something that is present, although its whereabouts are unknown. The meaning of the work is intended to be elusive, however through closer inspection its grotesque nature becomes more apparent.
The lace eggs suggest fragility, the large group representing how disease multiples and spreads. The patterns on the walls are suggestive of the spread of decay and its constant presence. The sounds are the cries that are muffled through time, till all that’s left is acceptance and hopelessness.
My inspiration for this project is drawn from personal experience with disease and how it becomes who you are rather than something you have. Disease is an abysmal depth that is often beyond repair. It is consuming, overwhelming and virulent. It hijacks the body and the mind of the one it consumes.
